What is a personal statement?
It’s a structured essay that allows you to present a convincing snapshot of you and why you aspire to be a (accountant, doctor, engineer, lawyer, pilot, translator, etc.). Utilize it to say what other aspirants cannot say, while still maintaining a professional tone. This “personal statement” comprises carefully selected information that is modeled into an “original/authentic story” that reveals one’s motivation to become in an intended position.
- Personal statement should include a brief, small, bite-sized representation overview of who you are, your strengths and any work experience and/or education you’ve got as a professional, and what you have to offer in terms of experience and ambition.
- Be sure to include skills you’ve gained, such as time management, customer service, teamwork, computer skills etc.
Why it is important?
Because it acts as the gateway between your application and admittance. If all grades are equal and everyone has similar extra-curricular interests, the personal statement will make you noticeable. It gives your personal reasons and the journey that has motivated you to pursue the field/study that you are applying for.
For instance, if you don’t have any practical work experience, you can always touch on your academic accomplishments or transferable skills gleaned over the years.
How to write a personal statement?
Before start writing your personal statement, make sure it is about to answer the following questions:
- Why do this position/ job/ role interest you?
- Why are you suited to this position/ job/ role?
- Do you have any previous jobs or training that relate to this line of work?
- Have you taken part in any projects that help demonstrate your capabilities?
- What specialist skills do you have that make you an ideal candidate?
